Sighting in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, August 12, 2006

Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on August 12, 2006 in Saint-Jean-de-Monts (Vendée, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

The report was collected in June 2008 and concerned an observation made almost two years earlier. In August 2006, possibly on the 12th, during the "nuit des étoiles" stargazing event, a witness was on the pier at around 11:30 p.m. when they noticed two dim balls of light. The lights were moving at low altitude over the ocean. For about 30 seconds they kept the same appearance, then their brightness suddenly became intense and they vanished in a fraction of a second.

No other witness account of the phenomenon was collected. According to GEIPAN, the observation resembles that of flying lanterns, but there is not enough detail or information to confirm this. The case is therefore classified C, meaning the data are insufficient.
