Sighting in Saint-Maixent-l'École, December 25, 2014

Deux-Sèvres, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on December 25, 2014 in Saint-Maixent-l'École (Deux-Sèvres, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

From their garden, the witness saw two glowing red balls drift slowly across the sky toward the East. They did not flash and made no sound. They crossed part of the sky over a few minutes and then disappeared. The sighting took place on Christmas night.

GEIPAN considered that the route, the red color and the festive night strongly suggested Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The eastward movement fits the northwesterly wind recorded at Niort in the weather data. The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
