Sighting in Saint-Porchaire, October 9, 1977

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on October 9, 1977 in Saint-Porchaire (Charente-Maritime, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On 9 October 1977, from about 8:30 pm until 11:30 pm, several people, some of them gendarmes, watched a luminous phenomenon whose colours kept changing and which did not look like a star.

The same day, at around 9 pm, one witness reported a separate sighting made from the ground: two intensely white beams of light, arranged symmetrically.

A third sighting was reported for 12 October 1977 at 7:45 pm. One witness saw a phenomenon for two seconds that lit up the whole surroundings. It consisted of coloured jets of light, like a firework burst shaped like a sun.

The gendarmerie investigation did not link these observations to one another. GEIPAN lacked information on them and classified the case C (insufficient data): these were sightings of luminous phenomena, with no established explanation.
