Sighting in Saint-Quantin-de-Rançanne, January 9, 2009

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on January 9, 2009 in Saint-Quantin-de-Rançanne (Charente-Maritime, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Two witnesses noticed a round object at 9:29 p.m. It seemed to hang motionless in the sky toward the south-southeast, and one of them saw it change color. The GEIPAN received only one account, sent by email. It referred to a photograph, but the photo was not attached to the message.

The investigation suggested that what the witnesses saw could have been the star Sirius, which was visible due southeast and is known for its characteristic color changes. However, the witness provided too little information for this explanation to be fully confirmed. The case was therefore classified C, meaning there was insufficient data.
