Sighting in Saint-Romain-en-Gal, September 5, 1980

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 5, 1980 in Saint-Romain-en-Gal (Rhône, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

During the night of 5 September, a gust of wind blew open the bedroom window of a young girl, who got up to close it. Outside, she noticed a bright object in the sky about a hundred metres from the house. It was shaped like a half-circle and gave off a very vivid yellow-orange light. It hovered motionless at roughly 150 m above the ground.

Several times, the object went dark while leaving a light on at each of its two ends. The sighting lasted about half an hour, and the object never touched the ground. It then went out for good. The child made no further sighting, and no other witness account was gathered about the phenomenon.

GEIPAN classified the case as C: the available information is insufficient to offer an explanation.
