Sighting in Sainte-Colombe, May 31, 2015

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on May 31, 2015 in Sainte-Colombe (Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

During an open-air party, about twenty people watched white patches of light drift slowly across the night sky. No sound was heard. One of the witnesses managed to film the scene and reported the sighting.

The glowing balls took a few minutes to cross the sky on a weekend night, which strongly suggests Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. They moved from north to south, consistent with the north wind recorded at Lyon-Bron.

The good-quality video fully confirms this explanation: the balls travel together without being connected to one another, and some of them go out. GEIPAN classified the case as A: sighting of Thai lanterns.
