Sighting in Sainte-Luce-sur-Loire, June 30, 2012

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on June 30, 2012 in Sainte-Luce-sur-Loire (Loire-Atlantique, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

At about 11:25 p.m., two witnesses were on their terrace when they saw three red-orange glows go past, one after another. All three drifted silently in the same direction. Photographs and a video of the lights were taken.

GEIPAN concluded that the behaviour described, the images, the late hour, the lack of noise and the fact that it was a Saturday night all pointed unmistakably to Thai lanterns. The weather record shows a westerly wind that day, which fits with the objects moving eastward. The case was therefore classified A: the witnesses had watched a series of Thai lanterns passing silently overhead.
