Sighting in Salleboeuf, April 7, 2012

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on April 7, 2012 in Salleboeuf (Gironde, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:30 pm, two people saw about a hundred pinkish points of light moving silently across a cloudy sky. The lights were low in the sky: two groups passed one after the other, and further points followed each other in single file. All of them came from the north-northeast and then turned to head due east. The observation lasted half an hour. Only one witness account was collected by GEIPAN.

The investigation compared this procession of white and pink balls, on a weekend night, to a release of lanterns, probably from a private party. Orderly movement of this kind, including a change of course, is common with lanterns, because they all follow the same stream of wind, which may not be uniform close to the ground. White and pink lanterns are also very popular at weddings. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probably Thai lanterns.
