Sighting in Saujon, May 23, 2015

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on May 23, 2015 in Saujon (Charente-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday night, between 11:00 and 11:15 pm, two people watched a very bright orange object cross the sky quickly and silently for about five minutes. A few minutes later, a second object with the same characteristics appeared. Only one account was collected, covering both observers.

The investigation compared these orange balls, which crossed the sky within a few minutes on a weekend night, to Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The movement went from west to east, which matches the westerly wind recorded at Cognac in the Météociel data. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
