Sighting in Selles-Saint-Denis, July 14, 2014

Loir-et-Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on July 14, 2014 in Selles-Saint-Denis (Loir-et-Cher, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

The witness was looking at the full moon at around one in the morning when seven yellow-orange balls appeared one after another. They moved silently, following each other, and then vanished. According to the witness, they travelled from the northwest toward the southeast.

The investigation compared this series of orange balls following the same path to Thai lanterns. The direction of travel fits fairly well with the light wind recorded at Romorantin, 15 km away: from the west at 1 a.m., then from the northwest at 2 a.m. The sighting took place after the football World Cup final and on the eve of 14 July, a time very favourable to public or private celebrations. The witness, who had not known about these objects before, recognised Thai lanterns in the photos and videos they were shown. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of Thai lanterns.
