Sighting in Sentenac-d'Oust, July 30, 2016

Ariège, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 30, 2016 in Sentenac-d'Oust (Ariège, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the Moon (class A).

What happened

At around 4:15 in the morning, a witness who was closing their shutters noticed a large, very bright orange point in the cloudy sky, about 20 to 25° above the horizon. They first thought of a fire in the forest, then of an atmospheric re-entry. The phenomenon stayed visible for two to three minutes, then gradually faded, stretching out lengthwise until it took the shape of an inverted "L". Only one witness account was collected.

The investigation concluded that the witness had been misled by the Moon. When the Moon is low and only partly visible between clouds, the bright shape seen is that of the gap between the clouds, here an inverted "L". The witness's drawing on a photo, compared with the sky chart during the reconstruction, left no doubt. GEIPAN classified the case A: misidentification of the Moon.
