Sighting in Six-Fours-les-Plages, January 5, 2015

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on January 5, 2015 in Six-Fours-les-Plages (Var, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At 7:41 p.m., a witness saw a single, very bright phenomenon cross the sky. It was white, blue and green, and left a trail behind it. The point of light moved quickly across part of the sky, in just a few seconds.

The investigation found that these features match those of a bolide, the luminous phenomenon produced in the upper atmosphere when a meteorite falls. The witness had suspected as much. The REFORME network confirmed this hypothesis, and a supporting document is attached to the file. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the witness had observed the atmospheric entry of a meteoroid.
