Sighting in Souchez, June 17, 2012

Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on June 17, 2012 in Souchez (Pas-de-Calais, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

From their home, the witness saw about ten red lights crossing the sky. They moved slowly and silently along a straight path. The witness also recorded videos of the event.

The investigation compared the witness's description and the videos with the southwest wind, the direction in which the lights drifted, and with the time of the sighting, which fell during the week. Everything matched the passage of Thai lanterns, probably released at the end of a party. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
