Sighting in Sud Ouest, February 6, 1989

France

Sighting on February 6, 1989 in Sud Ouest (France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 11:20 p.m., about ten witnesses who were unconnected to one another, spread across several departments in south-western France, saw a very bright light. It turned bluish and trailed a streak behind it, then vanished within roughly ten seconds.

The event was large in scale and was seen from places quite far apart, in the Aveyron, Tarn-et-Garonne, Haute-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne and Puy-de-Dôme departments. Several investigations were carried out by the local brigades at the sites where an object might have fallen, but nothing was found.

The case was classified B: the phenomenon was most likely a large atmospheric re-entry.
