Sighting in Tenteling, August 29, 2010

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on August 29, 2010 in Tenteling (Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

At about twenty past midnight, a witness standing on the first floor of their home saw some thirty objects they called "shuttles". They were flying beneath the cloud layer and moving slowly in from the horizon. They passed through the zenith and then vanished behind the urban skyline. The witness filmed the scene with a mobile phone, but the video did not capture what they had seen, which disappointed them greatly. No particular noise was heard, apart from a faint, distant rumbling now and then.

The gendarmerie and the GEIPAN received only this one account. The video closely resembles the many similar videos the GEIPAN receives of Chinese lantern sightings. The duration, the apparent speed and the direction of travel, which matched the local wind, also fit this explanation. The witness's drawing departs sharply from it, but it was only a very loose interpretation of what was simply a group of points of light.

A private investigator, called in by the witness, went to the site. They concluded that Thai lanterns had been released during a wedding party held in the village's function hall. The newlyweds told them they had launched 60 lanterns. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: Thai lanterns released at a wedding.
