Sighting in Tilly-sur-Seulles, August 8, 2012

Calvados, Normandie, France

Sighting on August 8, 2012 in Tilly-sur-Seulles (Calvados, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 2:40 p.m., under a clear sky, several people saw a large number of black shapes crossing the sky, apparently floating and falling. One of the witnesses managed to take photographs and two videos. In the images, the objects look frayed at times. The sighting lasted five minutes, and no particular noise was heard.

Only one account was collected. GEIPAN considered it very consistent: it was detailed and backed by photos and video, although it came from a single witness. The investigation noted that the objects moved in the same general direction as the wind and that their appearance fitted this. It concluded that they were very probably debris, either from a balloon that burst in flight or, more likely, combustion debris from a nearby fire. The case was classified B: probable observation of light, assorted debris carried by the wind.
