Sighting in Toulon, November 27, 2021
Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on November 27, 2021 in Toulon (Var, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).
What happened
Around 1:30 p.m., the witness was on their balcony when they noticed a bright point of light in the sky. The sighting lasted two minutes at most, which was enough time to take two photos. The light then disappeared behind the hill. The witness's partner also saw the object but did not give a statement.
GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and good consistency, even though there was only one testimony, since there were two witnesses and photographs. The investigation concluded that it was a festive mylar balloon, a material with an "aluminized" coating, shaped like a figure 8. In the first photo, the object closely resembles such a balloon. The grey tint observed contrasted with the bright reflection on the side facing the Sun, which is typical of reflective mylar. The trajectory and apparent speed were broadly consistent with the wind direction and strength at the time. The slight variations in the path can be explained by local airflow conditions, such as wind shear or hilly terrain. The balloon may have been released during a birthday party, as the sighting took place on a Saturday. The case is classified A.
