Sighting in Tourlaville, May 6, 2012

Manche, Normandie, France

Sighting on May 6, 2012 in Tourlaville (Manche, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Several witnesses watched several orange points of light drift silently across the sky on the evening of 6 May 2012, between 11:00 and 11:30 pm. The phenomenon appeared to go out and then vanished after a few minutes of observation.

The investigation noted that the lights looked like orange balls, moved slowly and without a sound in the direction of the easterly wind, and lasted only a few minutes. All of this strongly suggests Thai lanterns, probably released by someone pleased with the outcome of the presidential election. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
