Sighting in Tours, October 31, 2012

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on October 31, 2012 in Tours (Indre-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Almost three years later, the witness reported to GEIPAN something they had seen on the evening of 31 October 2012. At around 7:50 pm, an orange ball crossed the sky silently, moving from south to north. Its movement was fairly slow and followed a straight line. Intrigued, the witness filmed it. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation noted that the orange ball had taken only a few minutes to cross the sky, which strongly suggests a Thai lantern, all the more so as the sighting took place the day before a public holiday and on Halloween. The video, which had been publicly available on YouTube for a time, is consistent with this explanation. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable Thai lantern.
