Sighting in Treillières, April 16, 2011

Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on April 16, 2011 in Treillières (Loire-Atlantique, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 2:20 a.m., a driver and their passenger noticed about ten orange glowing balls moving horizontally. The lights drifted silently from the north-east toward the south-west and then gradually went out. The whole sighting lasted a few minutes.

GEIPAN noted that this description, orange lights on the move that faded after a few minutes, fits Thai lanterns in every respect. The wind was also blowing from the north-east, consistent with the direction the lights took. The timing, late on a weekend evening, is also typical of a lantern release at the end of a party. The case was therefore classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
