Sighting in Treize-Septiers, July 3, 2016

Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on July 3, 2016 in Treize-Septiers (Vendée, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 1 a.m., a witness in a car park saw several points of light appear one after another, then drift silently across the sky. They were irregular ovals, ranging in colour from red to yellow-orange, and very bright against a clear, starry sky. The witness was frightened because the lights seemed to be coming closer. They then disappeared from view, hidden by the landscape. Only one account was collected.

The investigation concluded that the witness most probably saw Thai lanterns, which they did not recognise because they had little experience of this kind of sighting. The testimony was not very consistent: little usable information was available, and details were missing, in particular on the path the objects took and the direction they were heading in at the end. Analysis of the video and photos nevertheless supported this hypothesis. GEIPAN classified the case as B: a probable sighting of a group of three Thai lanterns, carried along by the wind and released during a local festivity.
