Sighting in Troissereux, August 15, 2009

Oise, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 15, 2009 in Troissereux (Oise, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., a witness noticed a luminous phenomenon moving across the sky and watched it for about 40 seconds. It was elongated in shape and a luminescent green colour. The witness heard no noise.

The investigation concluded that the witness had seen a meteorite entering the atmosphere. The green colour is explained by ionisation in the upper atmosphere. The same meteorite was observed all the way from Basel, Switzerland, to the far south of Great Britain. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A, meaning the phenomenon was identified.
