Sighting in Valence-d'Agen, August 11, 2013

Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 11, 2013 in Valence-d'Agen (Tarn-et-Garonne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

A driver and their passenger were travelling on the A62 motorway between Agen and Toulouse at about 7 a.m. For around twenty minutes, they watched a white point of light in the sky to the north-east that seemed to stay still. Two white trails followed it, forming a triangle with no base. As they kept driving, they eventually passed the phenomenon and lost sight of it.

GEIPAN received only one account, which was precise and consistent but came without photographs or video. The sighting was hardly strange at all: the object looked and behaved in an ordinary way. The investigation took into account the weather, which was suited to condensation forming or not forming at high altitude, and the resemblance to similar photographed cases that occurred in the same conditions. The case was classified A: it was definitely an airliner leaving short condensation trails.
