Sighting in Valenciennes, June 24, 2011

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on June 24, 2011 in Valenciennes (Nord, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10:30 pm, a witness looking out from an apartment window noticed a purplish-red light in their neighbourhood. The phenomenon made no sound and was visible for about fifteen seconds. The light moved slowly, then vanished instantly.

No other witnesses were found. When the investigators interviewed the witness, the account proved fragile, which clearly weakened the consistency of the testimony. The information gathered on site did not help to understand the event any better, nor did it strengthen the testimony. The investigators also found it surprising that only one person had reported such a strange phenomenon in an urban area.

The case had a high degree of strangeness, but the testimony was not consistent enough. GEIPAN therefore classified it as C, for lack of reliable information.
