Sighting in Vatan, August 17, 1993

Indre, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on August 17, 1993 in Vatan (Indre, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., two witnesses noticed two white lights in the sky, together with flashing red lights. The whole thing moved slowly, and no sound could be heard.

The investigation quickly established that a military DC 8 aircraft that had flown in from England was looking for its landing runway that evening. It had made wide loops over the area in question. The white lights were its headlights, and the flashing red lights were its signalling lights. GEIPAN classified the case as A: it was an aircraft in the landing phase.
