Sighting in Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton, March 16, 2023

Eure, Normandie, France

Sighting on March 16, 2023 in Verneuil d'Avre et d'Iton (Eure, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

The witness was in a supermarket car park when they noticed someone looking at something in the sky. They began looking too and saw a dark, sharply pointed, triangular object that stayed motionless. The witness photographed it straight away, then watched it for about five minutes along with other people nearby. They then stopped watching to go into the shop. When they came back out, the object was no longer visible.

GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as good despite there being only one witness, because the photograph makes it possible to place the object precisely in its surroundings. The object's appearance and its stillness were reminiscent of a kite. Contacted by email, the municipal police confirmed that it was indeed a kite, flown from the Saint-Nicolas abbey, in the same direction as the object the witness saw. A patrol had paid a visit to the kite's owner. The police sent GEIPAN a photograph of the kite, which matched the witness's photograph in every respect. By cross-checking the azimuths in the two photographs, GEIPAN reconstructed the object's position and confirmed that it was close to the Saint-Nicolas abbey park. The case is classified A: observation of a kite.
