Sighting in Vicq, March 6, 2025

Haute-Marne, Grand Est, France

Sighting on March 6, 2025 in Vicq (Haute-Marne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a celestial body (star or planet) (class A).

What happened

At around 1 a.m., a witness was taking their dog out onto the terrace of their home when they noticed two white luminous shapes fairly low in the sky, just above neighbouring houses. They went straight back inside for their smartphone and took two photographs, one without zoom and one with digital zoom. They described a small luminous shape like a "V on its side". They also mentioned, without certainty, a third object higher in the sky, visible only in the unzoomed photo. About fifteen minutes later, from an upstairs level of the house, they tried to see the phenomena again, but they had gone.

The case rests on a single witness account, but it is backed by two usable photographs, which gives it good consistency under GEIPAN criteria. Analysis of the images with the IPACO software concluded that the two lights were very probably the Moon and Jupiter, which were setting at the time. Their white colour fits, and their positions in the photos (taken at 1:01 and 1:02 a.m.) match those given by the software's planisphere. The Moon was partly hidden by trees. The "V on its side" was probably caused by slight camera shake, since its shape differed between the two pictures. Jupiter's slight shift relative to the Moon between the images is explained by the witness having moved (parallax). Fifteen minutes later, both bodies were hidden by trees and rooftops. The third object was very probably the star Capella. GEIPAN classified the case as A.
