Sighting in Vienne-en-Val, September 6, 2015

Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on September 6, 2015 in Vienne-en-Val (Loiret, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably one or more satellites (class B).

What happened

At about 10:45 pm, from their garden, a witness noticed a point of light crossing the sky from south to north. They first took it for a satellite. The point stopped for a few seconds, then resumed its course before making a half-loop in the opposite direction. After stopping again, it vanished at high speed. Only one account was collected.

GEIPAN rated the case as moderately strange but of low consistency: a single witness, no photographs, and several missing details. The investigation concluded that it was probably a misidentification. An artificial satellite likely passed directly overhead, immediately followed by a meteor, probably from the Kappa Cygnids shower. This close succession may have been perceived as the movement of one single object. The stops and rotations described could also be a misreading of what was seen, since observing straight overhead forces a particularly uncomfortable posture. However, the lack of detail prevents formal confirmation of this hypothesis. The case was classified B.
