Sighting in Villaines-les-Rochers, March 20, 2011

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on March 20, 2011 in Villaines-les-Rochers (Indre-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

On a Sunday evening, between 9:45 and 10:00 p.m., several members of the same family were watching the sky. Two particularly bright stars that seemed to be moving caught their attention. One of the witnesses looked at them through binoculars and made out two triangular shapes with flashing orange lights.

The two objects travelled at a steady speed along a straight path from north to east. No sound was heard during the sighting. No other witness account of the phenomenon was reported.

The gendarmerie investigation pointed to a likely explanation: an aerial refuelling operation involving military aircraft, which had been operating in the area the witness described. GEIPAN classified the case as B, meaning probably identified.
