Sighting in Villerbon, May 14, 2014

Loir-et-Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on May 14, 2014 in Villerbon (Loir-et-Cher, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

The witness noticed a cigar-shaped phenomenon right next to an airliner. They ruled out a shadow and thought the aircraft and an unidentified aerospace phenomenon were flying together in formation.

The GEIPAN investigation pointed to several factors: the witness, the aircraft and the sun were positioned in a way that allows a shadow to be cast; similar cases are already known; the aircraft and the phenomenon moved together; the phenomenon looked slightly larger than the aircraft; and clouds were present in the immediate vicinity.

The case was classified A: it was definitely the aircraft's shadow falling on a layer of non-condensed microparticles at a similar altitude to the plane.
