Sighting in Villeurbanne, September 15, 2012

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 15, 2012 in Villeurbanne (Rhône, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 10:30 p.m., from the open window of their bathroom, the witness noticed a large number of multicolored points of light in the sky, arranged in a kind of trapezoid. The lights did not blink. The whole formation seemed motionless and was about the size of a large apartment building. The witness compared its height to that of a helicopter in flight. They took a few photographs, then looked away for a moment; when they looked back, the phenomenon had disappeared.

GEIPAN considered the strangeness to be low: the phenomenon was static, long-lasting and dim, and a possible explanation existed but could not be confirmed. The testimony was of medium consistency, since there was only one witness and the photographs did not match the witness's description. The investigation also took place long after the sighting. The case was classified C because there was no cross-checking information, such as other witnesses, a good-quality photograph or details of any organized light displays. The most likely hypothesis was a light projection, but it could not be verified.
