Sighting in Villeurbanne, March 6, 2014

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on March 6, 2014 in Villeurbanne (Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

In the morning, around 8:41, a witness noticed a dark object in the sky whose outline looked like a horse. It was moving and seemed to turn on itself. The witness put it at roughly 300 metres from where they were standing, and took photos and a video of it.

GEIPAN's investigation looked at the images and at how the object behaved. Both fit perfectly with a child's helium balloon shaped like a winged horse, a common model that is easy to buy. The case was therefore classified A: what the witness saw was a child's balloon.
