Sighting in Wahagnies, July 8, 2017

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on July 8, 2017 in Wahagnies (Nord, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11:45 p.m., a witness and their spouse noticed two orange discs moving one behind the other along the same path in a clear sky. Several more discs of the same color then appeared. All of them seemed to come from the east and head toward the southwest. No sound was heard during the sighting. The witness took five photos, which were never passed on to GEIPAN. This was the only account collected.

The investigation found that the colors and shapes described match a release of Thai lanterns: at low altitude and seen from directly below, they can look like discs. According to Infoclimat, the wind that evening blew from the north-northeast to the south-southwest, which could account for the path seen from the ground. The date, a summer weekend night, is also a likely time for parties and lantern releases. GEIPAN classified the case as B: Thai lanterns, probably.
