Sighting in Warlus, October 17, 2021

Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on October 17, 2021 in Warlus (Pas-de-Calais, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).

What happened

At around 7:06 pm, the witness, who was in a car with a friend, saw a rather flat light appear in the clouds. It then showed up as two grey spheres stacked one above the other. Their path, initially straight, suddenly turned perpendicular, and the object then sped up until it was out of sight. There were two witnesses, but only one gave a statement. No video was supplied and the photo extract could not be used. The case was therefore judged to have moderate consistency.

The investigation concluded that the witnesses had probably seen a novelty balloon of elaborate shape, possibly a Mylar type. Several points supported this: a novelty shape that is common for such balloons, a colour shifting from white to grey as the sun set, no noise, straight movement in the direction of the wind, and disappearance as it drifted away. The strangest aspect was the trajectory, perceived as two successive turns. These apparent changes of course were probably caused by two variations in brightness, resulting from two rotations of the balloon on itself. It exposed first a less reflective part, then a more reflective one, which gave the witnesses the impression of it moving away and then coming closer. GEIPAN classified the case as A: a novelty Mylar-type balloon carried by the wind.
