Sighting in Wavrin, August 2, 2013

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 2, 2013 in Wavrin (Nord, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At about 11:08 p.m., a witness and their spouse were driving when they noticed four red-orange points of light in a clear sky. The lights went out one after another. The sighting lasted a few minutes, on a Saturday evening.

Meteociel data indicate a light westerly wind. Given the layout of the location, the objects were slowly moving away from the witnesses toward the east. These elements (points of light visible for a few minutes on a Saturday night, going out in succession) strongly suggest Thai lanterns. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
