Sighting in Aeronef — (reg) Grand Est, August 10, 1998

France

Sighting on August 10, 1998 in Aeronef — (reg) Grand Est (France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

Around midnight, a great many witnesses, including a train driver, noticed a triangular shape in the sky. It had two red lights and one very bright white light.

After reading the press coverage of the event, one of the witnesses said that what they had seen matched a microlight aircraft (ULM), which had flown past near their home at about the same time. A Transall aircraft flying at low altitude along the line between the two observation sites was also reported.

GEIPAN's investigation therefore concluded that it was almost certain the witnesses had seen one of these two aircraft pass over. The case was classified A, meaning identified.
