Sighting in Albi, May 9, 2015

Tarn, Occitanie, France

Sighting on May 9, 2015 in Albi (Tarn, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Saturday evening, around 10:30 pm, a witness watched an orange sphere drift slowly across the night sky for about ten seconds. It moved from the west toward the southwest, and its brightness faded as it moved away. No one else reported seeing it.

The investigation compared this description to a Thai lantern: an orange ball crossing the sky over a few minutes on a weekend night fits that kind of object well, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. A release from the leisure park was suggested as a possibility. The direction of travel matched the light west wind recorded in Albi. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of a Thai lantern.
