Sighting in Alençon, October 27, 2014

Orne, Normandie, France

Sighting on October 27, 2014 in Alençon (Orne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a hoax (class A).

What happened

At 19:54 on an October evening, a witness standing in their yard under a clear sky saw a dark triangular object cross the sky quickly from northeast to southwest. The sighting lasted about two seconds. The object had fixed navigation-type lights at its corners and made no sound. The witness took two photographs, which they first said were unusable. At 23:43 they made the same observation, but the object moved in the opposite direction. No other witness came forward.

The case was published in February 2016 and classified C for lack of consolidated information and cross-checking. It was later re-examined. A contrast enhancement of the two photos revealed a dark mass, which can be attributed to the front of a building bordering the yard. The supposed object does not move between the two photos relative to that building. The witness later sent these photos to GEIPAN as showing the phenomenon, with no reservation at all. Their dates and times do not match the two passes: they are 3 minutes apart, whereas the passes were nearly 3 hours apart, and the witness had given times to the exact minute. The witness did not reply to GEIPAN's request for the date of the photos and details of the setting in which they were taken.

GEIPAN judged the testimony to be of medium consistency, but enough to support the conclusion that the witness was not sincere. No physical explanation was found, and nothing rules out that the witness saw something strange. However, the strangeness most likely comes from the account itself. The case was classified A: high probability of a hoax or of witness insincerity.
