Sighting in Aouste-sur-Sye, August 26, 2012

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 26, 2012 in Aouste-sur-Sye (Drôme, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 12:40 a.m., a witness noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky that they found puzzling, and took a photograph of it. Several dozen red objects, with steady, non-blinking lights, moved silently along a north-south path. They followed one another at regular intervals and kept a constant speed. The sighting lasted about five minutes.

According to the GEIPAN, the witness's description immediately suggested Thai lanterns: red balls crossing the sky horizontally, in groups, without any noise. The wind blew from the north at 11 p.m., then from the north-east at midnight, which is consistent with the north-to-south movement observed. The case was classified B: the sighting was probably the passage of Thai lanterns.
