Sighting in Arles, August 25, 2016
Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on August 25, 2016 in Arles (Bouches-du-Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).
What happened
At around 5:30 pm, three people who were outdoors noticed a luminous object drifting very slowly at low altitude. Its shape seemed to change as it moved. It went behind a row of cypress trees and disappeared from view. The witnesses got into a car to follow it but never found it again. Fifteen photographs had been taken.
Only one witness account was collected. It is consistent and provides enough usable information, and the photographs could be partly used in the analysis. The case has a low level of strangeness, mostly because of the object's unusual appearance. The witness could not relate it to any known phenomenon, probably having never seen anything like it before. GEIPAN classified the case as A: it was very probably a novelty Mylar balloon carried along by the wind.
