Sighting in Aron, May 31, 2019
Mayenne, Pays de la Loire, France
Sighting on May 31, 2019 in Aron (Mayenne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).
What happened
A witness was out for a walk at night, at around 11:30 pm, when they noticed a very bright sphere moving low in the sky. Surprised, they had time to take several photographs before the object disappeared from view because of the distance. They were the only witness, and the best of their pictures was sent to GEIPAN. In an email, the witness later gave an important detail about the direction of travel: the object moved from right to left.
GEIPAN rated the case as having low strangeness and medium consistency, since there was a single witness and the photograph was of poor quality. The investigation concluded that the witness had mistaken the International Space Station (ISS) for something unusual. The description closely matches it, as it is the only satellite bright enough to be photographed easily. The slow, steady motion and the round shape are consistent with the ISS, which did pass over the witness's sky at an angular height matching their description. Only the direction of the ISS's path appears reversed compared with the account, but the witness most likely mixed up the cardinal points. The case is linked to another sighting, at a consistent time, that was also attributed to the ISS. It is classified A: misidentification of the ISS.
