Sighting in Arradon, July 13, 2017

Morbihan, Bretagne, France

Sighting on July 13, 2017 in Arradon (Morbihan, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

One evening at 10:38 p.m., a witness standing in the yard of their home noticed a red ball and three green balls in a clear sky. The objects first stayed in place, then drifted slowly. The witness took photos. The lights were twinkling and gradually moved away until they disappeared. No sound was heard. This was the only account collected.

The GEIPAN investigation concluded that the witness probably saw a group of Thai lanterns in different colours. According to Infoclimat, the wind that night was blowing toward the south-east, the same direction as the sighting, which explains why the lights seemed almost motionless in azimuth. Their slow disappearance may have come from the burners gradually going out. The time of year, summer and the eve of the national holiday, also lends itself to this kind of festive event. The case was therefore classified B: Thai lanterns.
