Sighting in Audierne, October 28, 2015

Finistère, Bretagne, France

Sighting on October 28, 2015 in Audierne (Finistère, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a planet (class A).

What happened

At about 4:30 in the morning, a witness noticed two very bright white points in the south-eastern sky and was intrigued by them. They watched for roughly thirty minutes and heard no noise at all. The two points barely moved, following a straight path that rose slightly. The witness took three photographs. Clouds later hid the two bright points. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation found that the description matched the positions of Venus and Jupiter that night: the two planets were one above the other, a few degrees apart, at an elevation of around 10°, with Venus below and brighter, as shown by the witness's photo and a Stellarium reconstruction. Two discrepancies initially appeared, the direction of observation and the elevation. Contact with the witness, using local geographic landmarks, confirmed that they had in fact been looking east. Their estimated elevation, around 30°, differed from the photo, which shows about 10°. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: observation of a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter.
