Sighting in Aussois, February 28, 2009

Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on February 28, 2009 in Aussois (Savoie, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

One evening, between 6:30 and 7:35 pm, several people in a ski resort noticed two spherical lights of different sizes, each from a different spot. The lights were a long way off, but the witnesses saw these bright spheres move across the mountain range. Many photos and videos were taken before the lights disappeared.

The case reached GEIPAN very late, on 4 March 2011, as a questionnaire along with a very large number of photos. The investigation was not in-depth. Using two of the pictures, the two "luminous balls" were placed on the mountainside at the level of the ski slopes, at the height of the ski season. GEIPAN considered it probable that one of the lights was the headlights or floodlights of a slope-grooming machine (a snowcat), and the other an inflatable lighting balloon, a commonly used technique. The case was classified B, probably identified.
