Sighting in Barberaz, July 8, 2010
Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on July 8, 2010 in Barberaz (Savoie, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
During an outdoor party, about twenty people noticed a red light phenomenon at around 11 p.m. Only one witness gave an account. They first saw a red spot that kept growing until it looked like a flashing red ball surrounded by a purple-violet ring. The object moved silently in a straight line at a constant speed. It then vanished suddenly, which ended the sighting.
The direction of the phenomenon was described only vaguely: first toward the west, then from the Bauges massif toward the Mont Granier. That corresponds to a south-southwest axis, which would hardly pass directly over Barberaz. The place of observation was not given with precise coordinates.
GEIPAN rated the case as moderately strange but of low consistency. With too little information available, it could not confirm the Chinese lantern hypothesis. The case is classified C, insufficient data.
