Sighting in Autrèche, August 28, 2011

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on August 28, 2011 in Autrèche (Indre-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Shortly before 1 a.m., a driver and their spouse noticed orange points of light in the sky moving silently from the north-northwest toward the east. Looking more closely, the two witnesses made out seven triangles that seemed equilateral. Each one had a rounded shape inside one of its corners.

The sighting lasted about one minute. The objects then moved off due east, shrinking rapidly until they disappeared.

GEIPAN classified the case as B, probably identified. The number of objects, their color and their speed matched Thai lanterns very well. The date and time, a Saturday-to-Sunday night, and a westerly wind consistent with the eastward movement supported this explanation.
