Sighting in Autun, August 22, 2014

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on August 22, 2014 in Autun (Saône-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

At around 1:10 in the morning, a witness was surprised to hear two shouts in the night. They went to a roof window and, for a few seconds, saw a metallic-looking disc directly overhead, surrounded by small reddish-pink beams of light. The phenomenon moved about without a sound under a cloudy sky, and the witness followed it for roughly 20 seconds in all. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN considered the account consistent and precise, but it came from a single person and no photo exists. Several objective elements were taken into account: the circular shape, the presence of beams, the very fast movement, the cloud ceiling and the absence of noise. These led investigators to conclude that the witness most likely saw a set of lasers of the "Skytracker" type, moving rapidly and projected onto the base of the low cloud layer. The sighting was judged of low strangeness, since such objects behave in a fairly ordinary way. The case was classified B, probably identified.
