Sighting in Avignon, May 14, 2008

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on May 14, 2008 in Avignon (Vaucluse, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

During a birthday party in the evening, three people noticed three yellow-orange glowing balls in the sky. The balls drifted slowly along an east-west axis and made no sound at all. The sighting lasted less than a minute and took place between 9:30 and 10:30 pm. Only one of the witnesses sent an account to GEIPAN.

The investigation found that the description matched a release of Thai lanterns: the colours, shapes and type of trajectory were all consistent. The westward movement also fits the easterly wind recorded in Avignon at 10 pm. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
