Sighting in Bayonne, August 24, 2014

Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 24, 2014 in Bayonne (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

The witness saw twelve sparkling reddish-orange lights in the sky, drifting about in an irregular way. Gradually they grew dimmer and then went out altogether.

The sighting took place on a Saturday-to-Sunday night in August, in a tourist area. That context suggested Thai lanterns, which are often released at the end of festivities. According to Meteociel, the wind that evening was light and from the south, and the sky was overcast. Because the witness did not say which way they were looking or which way the lights moved, the movement could not be compared with the local wind to confirm the hypothesis.

GEIPAN classified the case as B, only slightly strange: the lights were probably Thai lanterns.
