Sighting in Bédarrides, August 14, 2014

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on August 14, 2014 in Bédarrides (Vaucluse, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 9:20 a.m., a witness who was looking at the Moon noticed four white, oval objects grouped together in the clear sky to the west. They seemed motionless or to move very little. They then vanished one after another. The sighting lasted one to two minutes, and the witness heard no particular noise. No other testimony was collected.

The gendarmerie checked for aircraft flights in the area and found none. Investigators considered balloons: a light north-westerly wind, which was picking up noticeably as the Mistral began to blow, could have carried them towards the witness and made them look almost stationary. However, a balloon release on a weekday at that hour seems unusual, even though it was the height of the summer festival season. Without precise information to support this hypothesis and without corroboration from other witnesses, the GEIPAN classified the case C, for insufficient data.
